Harley Electra Glide Review
|
![]() The Harley Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide is no shrinking violet. In fact excepting the Honda Gold Wing (which is of course a Jap bike so it does not really count) in my recently formed opinion it is the biggest, baddest, most comfortable motorcycle tourer on the planet. I can hear a few people sharpening their pencils to argue the merits of other great touring bikes but this ain't that kind of review. Here - Harley is king and if you don't like it - call yer mum. Having said all that - the first time I rode the big blue Ultra Classic Electra Glide from Motorbikehire.com.au, I was not all that happy. Let me explain. Puddling around at 60kph, the Electra Glide is a bit like one of those big elephant seals trying to look elegant on dry land. All clunky and ungainly. But like the seals have the sea as their element, the Harley Davidson Electra Glide has it's own element too. A long road and a faaaar off destination. Give the Electra Glide some room to move and this is a brilliant bike to ride. I almost titled this article 'Love at 100KPH' (and if I was a girl I might have) as at 100KPH, the Electra Glide is completely in her element. I know I am going to cop a ribbing from this but in the middle of winter, life is better behind a fairing at speed. Smooth, powerful - the Electra Glide is an apt name - it surged up the hills on the Putty Road and the straights were like flying a glider on a calm day - my trailing photographer on an 07 HD Fatboy was meanwhile freezing his arse off - ha, ha. Bloody brilliant. The bike has enough stowage to pack for a small army - well, two people any way. The model I rode did not have the radio option but who the heck would be listening to that when you can listen to the pipes instead? On that subject - the Electra Glide has a neat trick to keep the noise polution down - it thumps along very nicely at low reves but if you give it a bit of stick, it quietens right down - while some may not like this particlular feature, I liked the way it lets you sneak along under the radar. Kind of like a stealth bomber - but with more chrome. If you have any time to spare from what we all call a life these days (work, work and more bloody work), then you may just want to grab a warm companion (for the conversation of course) and head for the hills. A week or two aught to do it - see you when you get back.
